Walking at Craibstone

Looking north across Aberdeenshire towards Bennachie

Craibstone has a number of walking trails in the surrounding area, many with spectacular views of the course.

The variety of trails means walkers can enjoy a pleasant stroll or challenge themselves to a more demanding hike. Either way, the Brimmond Bistro is an ideal place to stop before or after a walk for a light snack and refreshments.

Brimmond Hill

Brimmond Hill Walks

There are two main walks up Brimmond Hill: one starts from the north car park, right beside the golf course (ask at the clubhouse for directions), and one from the west car park, on the road between the A944 and the B979, about midway between the two junctions.

From the north car park, go through the gate and straight ahead. The road winds up the hill and is mostly tarred, becoming a dirt road near the top, with spectacular views over Westhill and the golf course.

From the west car park, the path leads to the top of the hill. There is no need to leave it, and the stile at the end of the fence should be ignored. These walks can be combined for a larger walk. Please ensure all gates are securely shut behind you.

Tyrebagger Walks

This walk begins from the second Tyrebagger car park on the left, travelling from the A96 junction. The trail starts beside the information board and proceeds up the slope past a gate; at the fork, stay on the right path.

Follow the signs for Brimmond Hill. The trail later runs parallel to the golf course, passing the 11th tee, 10th hole and the entire 9th fairway; you will see March stones 35 and 36 along the way.

Near the 18th tee, two options lead back to the clubhouse: follow the trail right up through the forest to the north Brimmond Hill car park, or left through a cluster of trees and on to the clubhouse car park.

Elrick Hill

Walk out of the Craibstone car park following the signpost for all forest walks, climb up through the trees to the “moon pool” sculpture and fork right onto the brown trail. Cross the burn and carry straight on at the Elrick Hill sign.

Emerge onto the heather moor and follow the brown trail to the open summit. Take the yellow path to your left for a gentle descent with a view over the golf course. Watch for viewfinders along the way that explain the sculptures and their artists, including “Earth Chamber for the Trees and Sky”, and beware the European Bison lurking in the shadows.

The red trail takes you back through Tyrebagger Wood, past the eastern car park and back to the start. Come into the clubhouse for refreshments on your return.

Stroller’s Tip: Be sure to come to the Brimmond Bistro after your walk.
